[Singapore, 09 Sep 2023] Eshan Tharaka Koottage, a 30-year-old Sri Lankan, stunned authorities when he walked into the Marine Parade Neighbourhood Police centre and admitted to a cold hearted act. Between 10.45am and 4.42pm at a Holiday Inn Express hotel along East Coast Road, he fatally wounded his 32-year-old wife, Diyawinnage Sewwandi Maduka Kumari, in their hotel room. Police swiftly arrested him, with numerous patrol cars later spotted at the hotel. Despite the chaos, many guests remained unaware until they learned about the incident through media reports. On the night of the incident, a police hearse arrived at 10:30pm to transport the body to the morgue. The victim, a Sri Lankan studying in Australia, had eagerly anticipated a vacation with her husband after a year apart, as revealed by a classmate's Facebook post. According to local news, she was warmly recalled as "a friend to many, always offering kind words and a comforting smile." La Trobe University post-doctoral student Jose Jairo Villarreal-Diaz, who instructed Ms. Diyawinnage, has also made a post on LinkedIn to convey his shock that a fellow international student fell victim to such a tragedy. Mr. Villarreal-Diaz, who is from Colombia, expressed: “Sewwandi was my student and she was one of the sweetest human beings I could ever have in the teaching lab…I can’t describe the sentiment since she was in my class just last week.” Her vacation dreams turned into a nightmare upon arriving in Singapore. When officers arrived at the hotel room, they found the victim lying motionless with a slash wound. She was pronounced dead there by paramedics. A knife, believed to have been used in the incident, was recovered in the room. #learningisfun
